A week’s holiday in Portugal’s Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, starting at Arco de Sao Jorge high on the northern coast and the site of the fabulous Rosarium (see the ‘Carpe Diem’ film). Then weaving, climbing and dropping, along the steep coastal road to Porto Moniz at the northwest corner of the island before a dramatic drive high into the mountains and along the island’s barren spine. Then winding our way through lush greenery down to the fishing village of Camara de Lobos, followed by a long, delightful walk along the Levada Norte – one of many irrigation channels that carry water from the drier to wetter parts of the island – and lastly some time in the busy capital Funchal.
Why Fado? The Portugese connection of course but it is music – sometimes joyful as well as the heartfelt – that blends easily to the theatre of the island, not simply this huge rock and its weathers but its abundant colour and varied landscapes, which are testament to the industry of its hard-working people over centuries.
